Icon of Our Lady of the Southern Cross

Commissioned by The Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of the Southern Cross
This icon portrays Our Lady of the Southern Cross, an alternative title of Our Lady Help of Christians, Patroness of Australia.
Mary is seated upon a throne, holding the child Jesus. She wears a mantle, representing her humility and piety, yet upon this mantle is a crown. This simple crown design is taken from the crown found in the coat of arms of the Ordinariate of Our Lady of the Southern Cross.
Our Lady’s right hand holds a sceptre and her left an orb. Her outer garment is tasselled. The throne, crown, sceptre, orb and tassels are all indicative of Mary’s Queenship. Above Our Lady’s left shoulder is shown the Southern Cross, while the orb is a globe showing Australia, emphasising that this image of Mary is Our Lady of the Southern Cross.
The three stars on her mantle represent her eternal virginity – she remains a virgin before, during and after the conception and birth of Jesus.
The Christ child holds the scroll, showing divine wisdom, while his right hand is extended in blessing. The cruciform halo is a symbol of Christ’s Passion on the cross. The three dots in each arm stand for the Greek letters ω, Ο and Ν, which means “I, the being”, or “I am He who Is”, the name by which God reveals himself to Moses in Exodus 3:14.
